Fridays With Faith "The Community Burgoo" : Mrs Penny Pincher

Ok, I'm a day behind, but here's an appropriate story written by my mom, Faith, for fall harvest. I remember her fondly speaking of this burgoo she attended when she was a kid in her hometown. Hope you enjoy it!

"The Community Burgoo" by Faith

The entire Darling family were excited about the 'Fall Burgoo'. Their tiny community had a get together every second Friday of October. It was an unforgettable experience. Everyone wore a costume, and prizes were awarded by a group of judges.

This year the Darling family portrayed 'The Farmer In The Dell'. Pap-paw Darling was the farmer. Mam-maw Darling was the wife. Baby Noah was the child. Momma Darling was the nurse. Daddy Darling was the cat. Ross was the rat, and Grace was the cheese. There was much laughter, and a lot of work over the designing of the costumes. Tonight, the household rang with happiness.

"Hey, look at me! I'm really the cat's meow!" chuckled Daddy. He pretended to twirl his painted whiskers.

Ross pretended to nibble at Grace. "Yum, yum, I just love cheese," he said.

"Meow, I'd like a juicy rat for my supper," said Daddy.

And the chase began. Daddy cat chased Ross rat who in turn chased sister cheese. Just as Noah was about to join in the chase, Momma called from the kitchen.

"It's time we were leaving. Please help me load the food into the car. I'll pay a cookie a helper!" she coaxed.

"Yummy! I'd rather have a cookie any day." answered Daddy. "This ol' flea bitten rat can run along!"

Ross decided to tease, too. "I'll have you know, cat, that I gave all my fleas to the dog next door."

"You can jabber all you want," Grace flung over her shoulder, "but this cheese is heading for a cookie!"

Laughing, they all ran down the stairs to help Momma. After loading the hot dog buns, hot dogs, marshmallows, and a pot of vegetable soup, Momma was true to her word and gave each helper a cookie. She had baked sugar cookies in shapes of pumpkins, pilgrims, turkeys, and leaves. Momma had also baked some peanut butter cookies, and several dozen brownies.

It wasn't long until they reached the one hundred and twenty-five year old country store that hosted their get together. As they unloaded the car, they took in the sights around them. A trailer was loaded with hot dogs, bread, potato chips, and marshmallows. Pronged sticks with which to roast the goodies lay against the ladened wagon. Cookies of all shapes, sizes, and flavors tempted one's eyes as well as stomachs. There was also crisp apple cider to drink or hot cocoa topped with whipped cream. And, a gigantic cauldron of vegetable soup simmered over a small bonfire.

Oh, they had a grand time talking, visiting, playing, and eating! As everyone had their fill, things settled down enough for the costume judging to begin.

The Darling family sang and portrayed 'The Farmer In The Dell'. Pastor Jacobs dressed as 'Harpo Marx', and honked his large brass horn constantly. One couple dressed as 'Jack Sprat and his wife'. Another portrayed 'Red Riding Hood and The Wolf'. And, one boy dressed as 'Jack Be Nimble', and he actually jumped over a candle stick!

The Darling family won first prize as Most Original. Their prize was a country ham. Momma and Mam-maw were thrilled speechless over dreams of the delicious Christmas dinner it would make. After the festivities had come to a close, everyone sat around the bonfire and sang songs of thanks.

Brother Jacobs read scripture and spoke of the harvest time and how each one should not only gather in the apples and corn and other crops, but to gather in people for Jesus and the Kingdom of God.

While everyone pondered upon the wonders and the blessings of God, Daddy Darling led the community in this prayer song:

'All through the night, all through the night,
My Savior will be watching over me.
All through the night, all through the night,
My Savior will be watching over me.'

'He saved me so sweetly, so fully and completely,
And washed me in His own atoning blood.
My sins are all forgiven, I'm on my way to Heaven,
Walking in the smile of God.'

ARE YOU READY FOR GOD'S HARVEST?

Thanks for stickin' with me : Mrs Penny Pincher

Sorry I haven't been keeping up with my blog lately. Life happens, and lately it has stunk. Health problems, death in the family, and just trying to take care of everyone but myself has really caught up with me.

I really appreciate those who continue to check out my postings, and watch for matchups. Hopefully this week will be a bit back to normal.

Vote For Cheer Bling! : Mrs Penny Pincher

Cheer~Bling™ is a cheerleading and tumbling organization that helps build success in children attempting to help them reach self-actualization. On July 11, 2009 the organization hosted a Alopecia event to help raise money for a little girl (Cheer~Bling™ cheerleader) who has been diagnosed with the disorder. She is losing her hair at a rapid rate. The 3 coaches of the organization (Venessa, Jamie, Dana) all shaved their heads in hopes to help raise funds for the family. Three people (ladies) from the crowd likewise joined in shaving their heads. Many others cut pony-tails for the event. The organization is constantly seeking ways to help and work with the children in big ways. This is only one story or many, and many to come.

Fridays With Faith "It Doesn't Smell Like My Mommy" : Mrs Penny Pincher

My mom wrote a series of children's stories about 'The Darling Family'. These stories were based on her life growing up as a child.

Today, we make our first visit with the Darlings in a story called:

'IT DOESN'T SMELL LIKE MY MOMMY' by Faith

**I wrote this story the same month my momma was diagnosed with brain cancer. Several of the young men, little boys when she taught them in Sunday School, are now ministers. I thank God that I had such a wonderful momma and daddy!!!! Faye Arnold Ross was 'purer than gold'! ...especially to me!--Faith**

Grace, Ross, and Noah were excited! They were going shopping with Daddy! They were going to buy a present for their momma for Mother's Day.

Ross had called a 'kid's conference' the day before. They decided to pool their monies and buy a nice bottle of spray perfume for mommy. This was not an easy decision!

First, they thought of flowers, but daddy always bought her those. They thought of candy, but she was always dieting. Then, they thought of underwear, but that was too embarrassing to buy.

Finally, Grace recalled the time that Noah had 'bathed' in momma's cologne. All the kids recalled momma telling daddy that she was almost desperate enough to dab vanilla extract behind her ears! Ross said that he'd do almost anything for a whiff of that delicious smell. Grace dryly told him that he'd do anything for food. Ross figured that it would be best if they bought a spray cologne to prevent Noah from dumping the entire bottle on his body! So, it was with the resolve for a gift of perfume that the children went with their daddy to the little town's only mall.

Daddy rented a stroller for Noah and the quartet went into a large department store. Soon they were at the perfume counter.

"May I help you?" Asked a perfectly primped blonde clerk.

"Yes, ma-am," answered Grace. "We want to buy a bottle of perfume for our momma."

"Spray perfume," corrected Ross.

"What name-brand do you wish to purchase?" The lady questioned.

The children looked at each other in amazement. There was more than just one kind of cologne??

"Can we smell some of them, lady?"

In response the sales clerk gave Grace and Ross a sample bottle to sniff.

"No, this isn't my mommy," said Grace.

"This isn't, either," said Ross as they returned the bottles.

Again and again and again the children smelled the bottles of perfume. They became thoroughly disgusted that none of them smelled like their mother. Daddy was a deep shade of red, wishing strongly that he had never brought the children shopping. The sales clerk had lost her glossy veneer finish, and was just plain old-fashioned angry.

Across the aisle an elderly clerk had been amused while watching the children. The smile faded, however, when she saw the aggravation of the young clerk. Swiftly she moved over to the perfume counter.

"Maybe I can be of service," she smiled.

"Go ahead," grumbled the blonde. "I've had it!!"

"You said our perfumes did not smell like your mother. Tell me how she smells and perhaps we can come up with a perfect match," she said with a smile.

"Well," said Ross, "she smells like brownies and popcorn, cookies and cakes, and oh, yes!!! Spaghetti!”

"To me," added Grace, "she smells like bubble bath, and baby powder, and flowers."

"Yes, mommy smells good!" chirped in Noah.

"Well, no wonder it has been difficult for you to find a fragrance for your momma. She sounds wonderful! How you must love her!"

All three children shook their heads in agreement.

"Your description of her fits this perfume entitled 'Purest Gold'. Your momma must be as 'purest gold' in the way you describe her. God really blessed you with a wonderful mother."

Grace and Ross smelled the scent and declared it perfect! The sales lady wrapped the gift in flowered tissue paper and tied a large pink bow on top.

How proud the children were of their present for it was a gift to their momma.... their purer than 'Purest Gold' Mother.

Darling Family Bible Verse:

Her children arise up, and call her blessed: her husband also, and he praiseth her. Proverbs 31:28

Fridays With Faith "Lucifer, the October Treat" : Mrs Penny Pincher

This is a children's story my mom wrote for Halloween. It has been awhile since I've read it, and, now, it has brought tears to my eyes. This story was probably written in the early 1980's. Twenty years later, my mom was the little girl in this story. And, nearly thirty years later, I have a daughter with the same name as the girl in this story. Didn't even realize this until I just re-read it.

**********************************************************

"Lucifer, the October Treat"

Mr. and Mrs. Kit T. Cat proudly surveyed their new family. Mrs. Cat had given birth to three boys and two girls. All but one kitten was yellow and white. The odd color was a very small, runty, coal-black boy kitten.

When it came time to name their brood, the momma and poppa had no trouble at all naming their handsome yellow and white children. Sunny and Summer Cat for the girls, Lemondrop and Butterscotch Cat for the two boys.

"What shall we name our mischievous little runt, Momma?" Asked Poppa.

"Mischievous is CORRECT!" Emphasized Momma. "And while we are discussing our smallest son, lets add selfish and mean to the list."

"Ho, ho, ho." Laughed Poppa. "Boys will be boys. He's just a little devil! That's it! Since he's such a naughty kitten lets call him, Lucifer."

And Lucifer is just what that little kitten was called. Lucifer was mischievous...and selfish... and mean just like his momma said. He was always hard at work trying to make someone's life miserable!

Lucifer painted Sunny's tail, green. He put a snake into Summer's bed. He dropped a big, hairy spider into momma's pot of oatmeal. The little black kitten colored in Lemondrop's library book and scribbled all over Butterscotch's homework. All these things were overlooked until......

It was a rainy day in mid-October. Lucifer was bored. He had teased his sisters, he had tormented his brothers and he had scared his mother. There was nothing left to do except eat and he had done that. In fact, he had devoured all the food and milk that was for his brothers and sisters.

"Bored, bored, bored," he mused. "There must be somebody else to bother."

He thought and he thought then a sly grin came over his face.

All afternoon he worked at catching the barn mice. When the sun was going to bed in the West, Lucifer had corralled nearly ten field mice. He grinned to himself as he thought of the havoc he was about to cause. One by one Lucifer carried the mice to Farmer Ross's boots. He had just finished in time!!! Farmer Ross was coming to the barn with his oldest grandson.

"Darren," said Farmer Ross, " you feed the chickens and I'll go check on the cattle. But, first, I'd best put on my overshoes. It's awfully muddy out in the field."

Farmer Ross grabbed his boots. Lucifer was chuckling to himself 'cause he just knew there was going to be a big 'holler'! Farmer Ross looked in his boots and then, he looked at Lucifer.

"Well, well. I see you've been busy, again!" Said the Farmer. "You've played your last mean trick, cat!"

The farmer picked up Lucifer and hopped into his red truck.

Lucifer was frightened for the first time in his life. He knew that he was naughty. In fact, he was always bad but he'd always gotten away with his mischief. The farmer drove far out into the woods and dropped the kitten.

"Oh, this is great fun," thought Lucifer. He chased the falling leaves and gave a turtle a horrible time! For a while he had a lot of fun, but then, his tummy began to growl.

"Meow, Momma, MEOW! This isn't fun anymore. I want to go back to the hayloft," he said.

For weeks Lucifer walked around in the woods. He was growing thinner and getting hungrier and he was becoming wiser, too.

"Oh, if I had only been a better kitty! If I had not been so selfish and mean, why, I'd still be in Farmer Ross's hayloft with plenty to eat and plenty of hay to keep me warm!"

Ah, could it be that Lucifer's change of heart, his realization of his sins, is too late?

"Gr-owl. Little kitty," snarled a gray haired wolf, "you'll make a good mouthful for my supper."

"Oh, help, help," cried the kitten.

Around in circles they ran. It looked like Lucifer had met more than his match!!!

Then, a dart of brown was seen. It dived right for the wolf's head.

"Ow-o-o-o," howled the wolf and off he ran for greener (and safer) pastures.

"Sniff, sniff, sniff," sobbed Lucifer. "Thank you, Mr. Owl. You saved my life!"

"Glad to be of help, Son," said the owl. "Something else is troubling you, want to tell your friend all about it?"

The little kitten was so happy to have someone to talk to! He told the old wise owl about his life in the hayloft.

"... and until lately, Mr. Owl, I did not realize or care that I was making everyone's life miserable. I'd appreciate a second chance. I'd like to spend the rest of my life making someone happy."

"Well, laddy, you've had a hard time learning that lesson. Hm-m-m," pondered the grandfatherly owl, "I believe I can answer your request and make a little missy happy, too. Come on, hop upon my back. Watch those claws!" Reminded the old owl as they prepared for take-off.

Up, up, up they flew. Over the tree-tops and chimney's spouting smoke.

On and on they traveled into the starlit night.

"Mr. Owl, what night is this? There are oddly dressed children, everywhere." Asked the kitty.

"This is the night that children play 'dressup' and go to the homes of friends and family for candy and goodies. It's called 'Trick or Treat'."

They flew on until they came to a big two story brick house. Owl landed in the front yard.

"My, it's windy. Get off, Lucifer. It's all up to you, now. Never forget what you said that you've learned from your time in the woods. 'It's more blessed to give than to receive.' "

"Yes, sir. I won't forget. And. . . many, many thanks," Lucifer added as the great owl took off once more.

A big gust of wind whistled around the house as Lucifer scratched at the front door. It landed a party hat on the kitten's head.

"Oh, let me get it, daddy," came a girl's voice from inside. "You promised that I could get the door a couple of times."

Lucifer shivered under his colorful pointed cap. It certainly was a chilly night.

The massive door slowly opened. A little girl in a wheel chair looked out the door.

"Why, no one's here," she said in a very disappointed voice.

"Oh, no!" Thought Lucifer, "she's going to shut the door! Me-ow, MeOW, MEOW!"

"What, what's this?" She questioned. "Oh, a baby kitten wearing a clown's hat. You precious thing," she crooned. "But, I can't reach you way down there!"

Now, the old Lucifer would have marched right on in the house and demanded attention. But not the new Lucifer. He hopped right into the crippled girl's lap and began to lick her face.

"Oh, oh! I love you, too!" The little girl whirled her chair around. "Look daddy, look, mommie! I can't go 'trick or treating' like other boys and girls but I got a treat! God must have sent him! Oh, I know God did! Oh, thank you, God."

The little girl hugged and hugged her kitty.

"Why, I don't know your name!" Hannah exclaimed. "That's all right, though. Since you came to me on 'Trick or Treat' night, I'll call you 'Treat'. Do you mind, 'Treat'?"

"No, I don't mind," purred Treat. "I never did like that horrible 'Lucifer' name. Now that I've changed my ways I ought to have a new name."

After much loving and thanksgiving and a warm saucer of milk, it was time to go to bed. As Treat cuddled up to his Hannah, he made a solemn promise. He would love and serve his little mistress and really try to make her lonely days, happy.

Fridays With Faith : Mrs Penny Pincher

I'd like to introduce you to Faith:

This picture is one of Faith as a young woman just starting out as a responsible adult: married, a college graduate, and a new addition to the school system as a teacher.

Just a few years after this picture was taken (if that long), Faith had a little girl. She named that little girl Emilie Grace. So, Faith had a little Grace. Pretty good combo I'd say.

That little girl happened to be me, so Faith was my momma.

'Was' my momma. Although, in my heart, she'll always be my momma, just not in the physical sense now.

These days she makes her home in Heaven. The Lord decided on March 24, 2005 that Faith was too good for this world, so He scooped her up, and put her in His presence.

She had suffered from Multiple Sclerosis since 1995. Despite being a guinea pig (as she called herself) for different drugs and therapies to help slow the disease, it just progressed too rapidly. The last few years of her life were lived in a bed.

She wore a catheter. She was forever taking pill after pill. Her legs, although still attached to her body, were 'gone'. She could barely eat or drink. Her words often slurred. Somedays, she couldn't speak at all.

The amazing thing about Faith? She kept her faith through all of this. Even laying sick in bed, not knowing if she'd make it another day, she always praised the Lord and greeted each day with a smile. She still touched the hearts of people who came to visit her as she laid there paralyzed.

So, with that said, dear readers, I'm dedicating Fridays to Faith. She was a writer, and I know without a doubt that if she was still here on this earth today, she'd have her own blog. Now, I can share her stories.

I hope you tune in each Friday, and I hope you are inspired by her kind words.

50 items under $1.00 at Walmart (17 are FREE) : Mrs Penny Pincher

Just found a GREAT Walmart list to share! Of course, not all deals might be the same here for our region, so you'll have to do a little work at the store to find out for certain.

Go over to CouponingToDisney to see the list of Walmart deals. I can tell you right now, I've personally picked up the FREE Johnson's Buddies, the $0.14 Huggies Wipes, the $0.47 Suave Shampoo, the $1.00 White Cloud Toilet Paper, and the FREE Dove deodorant at Walmart.

I've also gotten FREE Degree trial size deodorant there as well.

Thanks to HonoringTheKing for finding the link to these deals!

FREE Schick Disposable Razors @ Walmart : Mrs Penny Pincher

That's right! Absolutely, positively FREE (except for sales tax of course).

There's a coupon in today's Smart Source for $2.00 off ANY Schick disposable razor. Walmart carries a pack of cheapo ones for $1.97. They're usually in a yellowish package.

Sooooo...not only are they FREE, but they can profit you $0.03 if they don't adjust any prices at the register.

Don't use these kind of razors? Pick them up to donate!

Mom's Best Naturals Cereal Coupon : Mrs Penny Pincher

Have you ever tried Mom's Best Naturals Cereal? Before my couponing days, I'd find it at Big Lots for about $1.99 a box. I was quite impressed. It tasted good!

Mom's Best Naturals Cereal contains:

No Artificial Preservatives
No Artificial Colors or Flavors
No Hydrogenated Oil
No High Fructose Corn Syrup

I noticed that Kroger carries these cereals. This evening they had them for $1.99 a box. Out of curiousity, I googled Mom's Best, and found printable coupons! Click here and register to print two $0.75 off coupons.

Can't beat paying $1.24 a box for cereal that's not full of junk!

More FREE Starkist Tuna : Mrs Penny Pincher

Click here to print a new Starkist Tuna coupon! It's $0.50 off any one pouch product. Print two, and take them to Kroger. I believe the pouches are still on sale for $1.00, so your coupons will double giving you two FREE pouches of tuna!

CVS, Meijer, Rite Aid, and Walgreens Ad Previews : Mrs Penny Pincher

For those looking for the weekly ad previews for CVS, Meijer, Rite Aid, or Walgreens, you can now follow the links I have posted underneath my FOLLOWERS box.

I've decided not to personally post each week's link due to the fact that I just feel it's redundant that I keep posting the links to those sites. Plus, I'm not sure if it's *ahem* truly legal that these ad previews are being posted, so I just kind of want to lay low under the radar so I don't get into trouble for promoting other sites that show these. KWIM?

You'll find that the drug store sites actually have previews posted for many weeks in advance. The Meijer ad is usually posted on Thursday or Friday in case you go looking for it (which I know you will). :big grin:

Bumble Bee Tuna Pouch Coupon : Mrs Penny Pincher

Anyone notice the $1.00 off printable for Bumble Bee Tuna Pouches here? Print your limit of two per computer. These coupons could result in cheap or FREE tuna pouches!

Blog Under Construction : Mrs Penny Pincher

As I explained in an earlier post, I'm going to be backing off a bit on what I've been doing. I've talked with a fellow blogger CouponAddictedMom, and we're going to try splitting up doing the matchups. I happened to graduate high school with her, and she shares my passion of wanting to help others save money, and help with donating.

I'm not going to post ad previews anymore. However, I will put the links to the websites where you can find them on the side of my blog.

I'm going to try to focus more on Kroger and ValuMarket deals. I also want to start dedicating time to posting the freebies I find from places like Walmart and Target. I think by doing that, I'll be of more help to those who really do want to find items to donate.

I also want to try to incorporate more things to make my blog feel more home-y.

No, not this homey:

This kind of home-y:

So...

With all this said...

PLEASE DON'T LEAVE ME!

pretty please? :sniffle:

I'll have the Kroger matchups posted later this evening. :D

Need Feedback Please : Mrs Penny Pincher

Hi everyone! I gotta be honest and say the two weeks of not having to post matchups was a much needed break. Being without a computer for so long tore me away from some of my friends and hobbies, but it made me make use of my time more with my kids.

My kids have just turned 1 and 3. The 1 year old is already walking. The 3 year old needs to be potty trained (any volunteers?). Plus, since I can't afford preschool, I've got to buckle down and start spending some learning time with my 3 year old.

With that said, I'm trying to rethink my blog. I want to continue to help, but I want to free up more time for my family. I also would love to see more coupon swaps start up. I wouldn't even be opposed to talking about couponing at churches, mom's groups, etc.

So, here are my questions:

1) Do you want matchups for the entire ad(s) posted?
2) Would you be ok with just the matchups for the best deals posted?
3) Do you use the printable grocery lists?
4) What else would you like to see?
5) Would you be interested in attending or hosting a coupon swap?
6) Would you attend a coupon swap party in December to meet others, trade coupons, share money-saving tips, and bring donations to benefit a local charity?

Thanks so much!
